If you have an older house then you may have a header or ceiling tank that supplies water to your hot water cylinder. This header tank, made of copper, galvanised iron or plastic may also supply low pressure water to your shower or your taps. Sometimes the header or ceiling tank can overflow. This is normally because the inlet valve or ball cock has a faulty seat or the washer has deteriorated and needs repair.
Low pressure hot water cylinders are less costly than mains pressure hot water cylinders. Additionally the low pressure is easier on the taps and fittings. This type of system usually requires larger pipes and when ordering taps it is better to advise us so that the tap will provide a good volume of water. A good low pressure system can be economical and provide very good showers. Pressure reducing valves and temperature pressure valves are less common with this system. Overflows and expansion from the hot water cylinder is piped back to the tank where it can be used again. Tank type systems are sometimes necessary because water comes from a pump and rather than have a pump running continuously the water is pumped to a tank and then disbursed throughout the house.
