Check them out.

Your gas appliances need regular servicing to keep them operating correctly and safely.

Here are some of the signs your gas appliance is overdue for a servicing.

If you suspect your gas appliance is not functioning correctly:

  • turn off the gas
  • extinguish all flames including cigarettes
  • call a certifying gas fitter to check and service your appliances

1. Hard to light appliances

Your pilot light may go out frequently, or make popping noises

2. Lazy Yellow Flames

Pilot lights and main burner flames should always burn bright, crisp blue (unless it is a gas fireplace which is designed to have yellow flames). A yellow or orange flame is a sign of incomplete combustion.

3. Soot, Marks or Stains

Any sign of brown/black soot or marks around the appliance is also a sign of incomplete combustion.

4. A Bigger Gas Bill

If there has been a steady increase in your gas bill, you may be wasting gas through blockages or a build up of dirt.

5. A Gassy Smell

Natural gas and LPG are odorised to make them easier to detect. If you smell gas or an unusual odour inside or around your home there may be a leak. This is a serious health risk.

6. Problems with water temperature

There are many issues that could cause your hot water to become too hot, too cold or to cause the temperature to fluctuate. Problems with the gas valves, vents, thermostats or thermocouples, sediment build up - these can all cause problems. You may even have outgrown your water heater and may need a bigger one.

7. Hasn’t been checked in the last 2 years

Your gas appliances should be safety checked and serviced regularly in line with the manufacturers recommendations. Rinnai and Bosch recommend 2 year service intervals while Rheem and Paloma recommend annual servicing.

8. Ill Health

Headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, confusion, chest pains or loss of consciousness without any other apparent cause could be the result of carbon monoxide poisoning – stop using your gas appliance and call immediately for a service.

If you are worried about your gas appliance or it has not been serviced in the last 24 months – call us. We are certifying gasfitters in Auckland.  We can service, repair if required and certify your appliances.
